If I am being honest, I had to ask myself, when and why did I start celebrating Cinco De Mayo and the only reason I could come up with was, it was day for me to take my family and friends out and be festive. In other words a day to party!!!! Cinco De Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrated in the United States since the 1960’s in part because Chicano (Mexican) activist raised awareness. When I got wind of the Holiday, I started celebrating with my family and friends never educating myself on the true meaning as to why it is important to some Mexicans. Recently I spoke to a few people I know of Mexican decent to ask them if and why they celebrated the holiday and I received mixed responses. Some were big supporters of the Holiday and like myself enjoyed having a big celebration with their families including traditional Mexican dishes, drinks and parades, others explained that it was of no importance, just another day for them and their family. So what does Cinco De Mayo mean to you? Here is what I now know about the 5th of May. After reading this article, ask yourself is this now a holiday you will mark your calendar for?
