Juneteenth commemorates a day full of pride, hope and growth in the Black/African American community. We recognize Juneteenth as a day of triumph where slavery was abolished according to law but not according to some states that refused to recognize the proclamation until troops marched into Galveston Texas and Union General Gordon Granger famously read the executive order of the United States that “ALL SLAVES ARE FREE.” The understanding that slavery lasted longer in states than the law allowed raised awareness of the many injustices Black Americans overcome and our willingness to speak up and let our voices be heard. Juneteenth wants to be celebrated as a day of remembrance but also as a day of celebration for all of our ancestors that couldn’t celebrate their freedom.
